This course aims to provide practical knowledge necessary for efficiently building quality softwares by combining existing ideas and libraries. In this unit, students will learn how to define problems, and how to gather knowledge/information to support decision making. Topics include system analysis, system design and development methodologies, system planning, and project management. Introduction to tools and libraries will also be provided to foster practical skills which are readily available for industries.

This course provides the concept of computational thinking and foundational computer science. For the students of noncomputer science majors, this course has focus on the use of effective examples and analogies using principles of computer science. In addition, this course demonstrate the ways that these concepts are applicable in other fields of endeavor and to keep this material both accessible and relevant to noncomputer science majors.

This course has two goals for students. The first is to help students write technical documents by training them to learn technical writing procedures. We will read and discuss technical documents as well as materials about how to do technical writing. All papers will include revision days where we can work the writing process as we write these papers to better understand how we compose, and to learn once again that there is nothing neat and tidy about writing and revising. In technical writing with the audience so important, we need feedback and must adjust our documents continually. After completing the technical papers, students will be expected to apply their knowledge of strong technical text, graphic placement, and design features within a proposal. The second is to improve students’ communication skills with team discussions and debates. Because both persuasive arguments and evidences are two important elements in the communication process, all students should have enough experience in both the arguments and evidences. In order to deal with this point, team discussions and debates on social issues are conducted.
