Introduction

Architecture is the capsule that holds human life. How is this capsule formed?

When a building owner feels the need, and only after calculating what kind of architecture is necessary, do they find a space that satisfies the need while taking into consideration the design process of its possible appearances. In this process, we consider safety, environment and economy. The difference between buildings and works of art is that they must secure the safety and comfort of its users from various external forces (loads) or from the environment such as wind and vibration for a long period of time. For that reason, we choose building materials through structural analysis and design process. We also plan and design the building environment so that users can be comfortably sustained through controlled temperature and humidity,  adjusted lighting and reduced noise pollution. It is necessary to select optimum material for each step and to consider the economy as to its costs. The results of this process is recorded onto graphs and transmitted to the site, where the building will be constructed.  Architectural engineering, in other words,  is the field necessary for constructing building -  traditional architectural design, structural engineering, environmental engineering, as well as fusion/complex field such as economic, management and construction IT.

The greatest advantage of the Department of Architectural Engineering is its grand scale and history that  provide all fields of studies students can choose from. If you have excellent artistic sense and want to study design, you can take a total of six semesters of architectural design subjects structured systematically from the first year. This is a difficult curriculum from other universities’ architectural engineering department. If you are interested in physics or mathematics, you can choose structure. If your focus is on helping people with convenience, you can choose environment. If you are good at chemistry, you may choose architectural materials, or if you have business talent and want to learn management and economics, you could choose construction planning or development and administration. If computer is your interest, you can study architectural IT more deeply to develop your ability.

A shortcut to becoming a leader who can make social contributions
Hanyang University’s Architectural Engineering is ranked sixth in natural science and engineering field in which CEOs of 1000 major companies in 2010 graduated from. These results come from many former graduates who were the driving force of national development in various parts of the world, including the hot economic rebuilding of Korea and the literally hot desert of the Middle East. Since 2010, 2-3 students pass the civil service examination - Technical division-, and they are devoted to the development of the country in different ways while working as high-ranking civil servants in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in Seoul City Hall as well as other  government agencies or in local governments.

CUL312 General Physics and Experiment 2 The goal of this course is to make you familiar, at the conceptual and basic problem-solving level, with the physics of mechanics, electricity, magnetism, heat, and waves, optics and modern physics. The basic philosophy of CUL312 can be summarized as follows: The approaches used to achieve these goals involve 1) lectures to interactively discuss and demonstrate the principles, 2) laboratory experiments allowing you to actively explore these principles, and 3) interaction with instructors in discussion sections to provide one-on-one help with concepts and problem solving.

GEN131 Principles of Computer Programming This class teaches the basic principles and techniques for solving real word problems using computers. Students can develop the ability to design efficient programs by learning the syntax of high level languages, the concepts of and elementary methodology for program design, and implementation techniques. Topics to be covered include the concepts of computer programming, basic programming methodology, data types, operators, expressions, control flow, functions, program structure, pointers and arrays.

The objective of this program is to develop communicative competence and motivation to communicate in English both inside and outside of the classroom. The rationale for the program is basically to provide students with a sound opportunity to develop the 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The proposed program combines spoken and reading components in a single class format with clear emphasis on spoken English; it utilizes a communicative approach, targeting spoken language skills in conjunction with reading skills, and reserving writing for homework (although minimal writing will b done in class). The 4 language skills will be integrated witin a well-conceived spoken English program which emphasizes speaking time in class.

This course is a continuation of CALCULUS1, which aims at preparing the students for their study in their respective major subjects in natural sciences or engineering by equipping them with the knowledge of calculus and some basics of analytic geometry so that they may have the necessary mathematical background and the ability to take logical approaches when they confront the various problems in their study. The course presents the part of calculus and analytic geometry which include linear algebra, matrices and systems of linear equations, functions of several variables, partial differentiation, double integration and vector calculus, which are more advanced subjects then those of CALCULUS1.

Students will select a cycle of construction process e.g. curtain-wall, form-works etc. Relevant literature reviews follows. By analyzing the literatures, students should present a theoretical framework including category and aspects by which the real site can be investigated. The results of team projects should include organization structure, procurement system, WBS and CBS of project. Selected cycle of construction method should be presented in terms of actual sequence and its cost and CPM schedule. The actual sequence should be presented in 3D digital model as well.
