Introduction

Clothing and textiles studies are for comprehensive understanding of clothing, which plays an essential role in human life in relation to society. It also studies specialized knowledge with theories and practice of clothing. In the department of clothing and textiles, students learn about humanities and social science which will provide understanding in clothing psychology, clothing culture history, fashion marketing, and learn about natural science fields including clothing materials studies and clothing composition, and also learn about art fields such as fashion design, and fashion illustrations. Students will deal with all functional, aesthetic, and economical issues of clothing ranging from clothing materials to the human condition. Through this diverse and organic approach, this department aims to establish and systematize basic theories in order to develop the overall clothing culture.

Students of department of clothing and textiles have advantages of acquiring comprehensive knowledge of design, practice, and theory required in clothing industries. Therefore, after graduating, they will bring out the best in professional fashion fields, such as being clothing managers, fashion designers, fashion editor, MD, and stylists.

Highlights

Best facilities in the nation
Department of clothing and textiles’ building has undergone a major renovation in February 2013, now boasting the best facilities among departments of clothing and textiles in Korea. Each classroom and laboratory is fully equipped for classes and is open 24 hours a day to improve students' academic ability.

High internalization index
The department includes one foreign full-time faculty member, and the ratio of English-only classes in this department is the highest among departments of clothing and textiles in Korea. Also, this department offers a variety of international exchange student programs through partnerships with world leading universities abroad. Students are sent to numerous countries every year, participating in various programs such as FIT in the USA and short-term training at prestigious universities in fashion such as Saint Martin in the UK. 10 graduates have secured full-time professorships overseas including the US and China at prestigious international universities.

Onsite training
Students engage in a variety of activities such as major field trips, internships at clothing companies, exploring fashion industries, visiting new designer studios, and curriculum-based exhibitions and graduation fashion shows. Professional invitation seminars are also held several times every semester. Department of clothing and textiles also provides full support for workshops, equipment production, production costs, and event expenses and expenses for fashion related contests both at home and abroad.

Hanyang Leadership(HELP: Hanyang Essential Leadership Plus) is the leadership development program of Hanyang University that "helps" Hanyang students to be CEOs. The first step of this program, Human Leadership(HELP1) is a course offered to freshmen students. It is focused on helping them establish characters and values. For students of no experience in computer programming area, the fundamental concepts and the methods of application of a computer programming language will be studied and learned by going through a developing process of a simple computer game from the bottom using "Python", very easy programming language to start. By inducing students to discuss freely and have question and answer sessions briskly about questions coming to mind during developing computer programs in practice, students will acquire computer programming understandings. Then the purpose of this course is to develop their ability to produce creative ideas in fusion technique for their major area in highly information-oriented society.

This course aims to survey some important theoretical results recently obtained in science and technology studies. We will carefully examine a number of concrete case studies studied by scholars from philosophy of science and technology, sociology of science and technology, and history of science and technology. The students taking the course shall learn various aspects of modern science and technology in the context of modern society. They shall appreciate how modern science and technology from the nineteenth century has come to manifest a number of its unique features, which can be clearly distinguished from the science and technology of even, the eighteenth century. We will discuss in the class the significance of differences for proper understanding of science and technology of our time. The course will also encourage more interactions between humanities and natural sciences so that we can make well-informed and reasonable decisions concerning complicated issues which are so common in our multi-layered society. The target audience of the course is students studying natural sciences and/or engineering. The contents of the course will be stylized each term, considering the student';s needs and backgrounds.

Computer Design Practice Introduction to the computer as a tool for design of textiles, apparel, and pattern making. Students study operations and functions of the computer and develop greater familiarity with computerized design and potential in the design process. Pre-programmed design reference material and original student design are used as examples, and the possibilities of computer generated layouts and repeats are explored.

The Professional Academic English for students at Hanyang University focuses on the development of the oral and written communication skills, which are required in the globalized world community. The course aims to help students develop the competencies that are required in their future studies and career: professional knowledge, interpersonal and communicative competences. The course requires the students to develop creative problem solving skills. For this, the students perform various tasks by investigating and analyzing engineering topics as well as developing solutions. The students’ communication and negotiation skills are systematically supported by language skill development such as learning academic forms and structures of the language that are used in formal oral presentations and essays. The expected course outcome is that students are able to write academic reports, participate in discussions and make oral presentations in English on their major topics. Throughout the course, the students are encouraged to explore various major-related topics, to conduct systematic problem analyses, and to collaborate for creative problem solutions. Classroom activities mainly focus on the oral presentation and writing skills, and the preparatory activities of the essay writing. The course requires the students to make three oral presentations and write three essays in English on their major-related topics. Students are required to make a portfolio of their work, to be submitted and assessed. This will be discussed in class.

Structure and Form in Art and Design : This class is based primarily on lectures concerned with the geometry of two- and three-dimensional design. A series of short, one page, practical design exercises or mini projects to be completed by each student will be the means of assessment. The concern is with fundamental geometrical aspects of design and is inspired by the renowned Bauhaus Design School (Germany) of the early twentieth century and by developments in design education spearheaded by British art schools in the latter half of the same century. Adjustments and developments are made in order to address issues of importance to designers in the early twenty-first century.
