Introduction

Nuclear engineering is literally a study that uses power of atoms. Atoms emit energy through nuclear reactions (fission, fusion). When the nuclear reacts, it releases heat energy that is equal to the amount of the decreased mass. After the reaction, the nuclear emits radiation energy as it converts from an unstable to a stable state. In order to enrich our lives through utilizing both energies, learning related theories, developing technologies, and researching and exploring new fields are the goals and aims of the Nuclear Engineering Department. In other words, nuclear power engineering is divided into nuclear power generation and radiation.

The field of power generation covers a series of processes that convert the energy generated after the aforementioned nuclear reaction into the energy from necessary for our daily lives. The best example is a reactor power plant. Aside from that, nuclear power is used as a power source for large ships, seawater desalination, as a heat source for spacecraft as hydrogen is produced, and as a electric power source for submarines. On the other hand, fields that utilize radiation energy in various areas are non-power generation fields (fields of radiation usage) which are widely used in IT, NT, BT, food, space, and chemical industries. Recently, its usage and importance has increased in relation to medical care.

Highlights

Shortage of nuclear power experts and national support
By 2020, 18,000 nuclear-related personnel will be needed. The government is working hard to establish KINGS (KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School) and provide nuclear power education in order to cultivate talent. Although the number of universities with nuclear engineering departments has increased dramatically over the past few years, the manpower shortage is getting aggravated due to the expanding industry size and lack of export manpower. This department is conducting programs for nuclear/radiology students in the Korea Research Foundation in order to cultivate skilled manpower with about 10 students studying nuclear engineering at Hanyang University receiving research grants (research equipments, scholarships, etc.) each year.

Traditions and internal support
This department has the longest history as the first nuclear engineering department in Korea. It has turned out the largest number of graduates leading to many opportunities for students as former graduates play a leading role throughout the nuclear industry. Students willing to participate went to United Arab Emirates as an intern for two months in 2015. During their senior year, students conducted experiment classes at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in Daejoen. In addition, nuclear energy colloquium is held to introduce research in various fields of nuclear energy once a week during a semester.

In the lab experiments, the students get familiar with the scientific analysis methodology by performing the experiments that verify the proposed principles.

This course is a continuation of CALCULUS1, which aims at preparing the students for their study in their respective major subjects in natural sciences or engineering by equipping them with the knowledge of calculus and some basics of analytic geometry so that they may have the necessary mathematical background and the ability to take logical approaches when they confront the various problems in their study. The course presents the part of calculus and analytic geometry which include linear algebra, matrices and systems of linear equations, functions of several variables, partial differentiation, double integration and vector calculus, which are more advanced subjects then those of CALCULUS1.

This course needs to understand the more important phenomena such as Neutronics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, reliability engineering and consequence analysis. This course is concerned about the engineering discipline of Heat Transfer and thermal design problem. The First Law of Thermodynamics will be reviewed: closed and open system forms required for heat transfer analysis for evaluating the reactor safety are developed. The three important modes of heat transfer: heat conduction, thermal radiation, and heat convection. In practical reactor accident problems, these modes of heat transfer usually occur simultaneously.
