Introduction

The Department of Korean Traditional Music at Hanyang University is a top-ranked university with excellent faculty members and students. It is made up of students who are majoring in Korean traditional music. The school is training musicians with excellent practical skills through individual practical training and deep practical training, and through a variety of theoretical education, the department makes it possible for students to acquire a broad and deep knowledge on the entire music including not only Korean traditional music but also Western music. The department provides high-quality education that nurtures professionals who have both practical skills and theoretical knowledge, and produces a lot of talented musician.

The educational goals are as follows. First, to cultivate professionals through the specialization of each major field, such as instrumental music, vocal music, composition, and theory. Second, to make students understand the general context of Korean traditional culture based on their expertise in each major field. Third, to make them identify the characteristics of Korean culture by comparing the connections and differences with other neighboring countries’ music. Fourth, to make them explore the direction of contributing to the common culture of music through the relative understanding of Western music as well as Korean and Oriental music.

Highlights

Various scholarship benefits
There is also a scholarship from the music college as well as from the University. The music specialist scholarship will be awarded for a total of four years when passed with more than a score of the standard in the regular practice test. In addition, students can receive the full scholarship from the next semester until graduation regardless of the standing in the school when they receive a prize at the designated foreign competition. 

Various performance opportunities
Every year, the largest regular concert is held at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts. The entire class of Korean traditional music is participating and show traditional Korean music and Korean traditional orchestra. At this time, through audition students get an opportunity to play with orchestra teams. There are also various opportunities to participate in performances including the spring/fall concert, the string concert, the wind concert, the vocal concert, and the ensemble concert by each major.

Excellent achievements in competitions

In the Department, students have excellent performances compared to other schools, and have won awards in all major competitions in various famous competitions such as the Donga Traditional Music Competition, which is the most famous competition in the Korean traditional music genre, and the National Korean Traditional Music Competition. There is a strong relationship between professors and students. A small number of students will receive practical instruction directly from a professor through a major course and a strong relationship with a major professor will be formed. The preparations for the regular concert and the major lessons will make the relationship more intimate and musical exchanges will become more active.

GEN 193 Practical English Conversation 1 The objective of this program is to develop communicative competence and motivation to communicate in English both inside and outside of the classroom. The rationale for the program is basically to provide students with a sound opportunity to develop the 4 language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The proposed program combines spoken and reading components in a single class format with clear emphasis on spoken English; it utilizes a communicative approach, targeting spoken language skills in conjunction with reading skills, and reserving writing for homework (although minimal writing will be done in class). The 4 language skills will be integrated witin a well-conceived spoken English program which emphasizes speaking time in class.

Students participate in regular, weekly, student recitals as critical listeners and criticize fellow students' performances verbally or in written form. Students will have more professional experience through these processes which cannot be experienced in the classroom of in the individual lessons. The goal is for the student to become adept in recognizing scales and modes, keys, intervals, consonances and dissonances, chord construction and its inversions (including 7th chords), and a complete knowledge of music terminology.

The lecture will discuss studying skill including taking notes, taking exams, time management and subject enrollment in order to guide students to achieve an ideal studying pattern and further to set up a career path. It will also deal with basic information about diverse study areas, domestic and international social issues and career development.

Hanyang Leadership(HELP: Hanyang Essential Leadership Plus) is the leadership development program of Hanyang University that "helps" Hanyang students to be CEOs. The first step of this program, Hanyang Leadership(HELP1) is the core course for freshmen. This course is composed of 3 parts, "pride in Hanyang", "core values in global society" and "life planning". In "pride in Hanyang" students will review the history, values and vision of Hanyang University. In "core values in global society" students will study 6 core values and case study on the core values of global companys. This course aims to survey some important theoretical results recently obtained in science and technology studies. We will carefully examine a number of concrete case studies studied by scholars from philosophy of science and technology, sociology of science and technology, and history of science and technology. The students taking the course shall learn various aspects of modern science and technology in the context of modern society. They shall appreciate how modern science and technology from the nineteenth century has come to manifest a number of its unique features, which can be clearly distinguished from the science and technology of even, the eighteenth century. We will discuss in the class the significance of differences for proper understanding of science and technology of our time. The course will also encourage more interactions between humanities and natural sciences so that we can make well-informed and reasonable decisions concerning complicated issues which are so common in our multi-layered society. The target audience of the course is students studying natural sciences and/or engineering. The contents of the course will be stylized each term, considering the student';s needs and backgrounds.

This course aims to cultivate among students the comprehensive understanding of science and technology in modern society, employing philosophical methods and concepts. To do this, the course offers a survey of some important theoretical results recently obtained in science and technology studies. We will carefully examime a number of concrete case-studies, ranging from the electrification of America, quantum revolution to the introduction of western science to traditional Korea. We will then discuss the intrinsic nature of modern science and technology as well as its socio-cultural aspects in the context of modern society. Students who take the course shall appreciate how modern science and technology from the nineteenth century has come to manifest a number of unique characteristics, which can be clearly distinguished from the science and technology of even, the eighteenth century. We will discuss in the class the significance of this difference. The course will also highlights the importance of dialogue between experts with different background and encourage more interactions between humanities and natural sciences, so that we can make well-informed and reasonable decisions concerning complicated issues which are so common in our multi-layered society.

For this, the students perform various tasks by investigating and analyzing engineering topics as well as developing solutions. The students’ communication and negotiation skills are systematically supported by language skill development such as learning academic forms and structures of the language that are used in formal oral presentations and essays. The expected course outcome is that students are able to write academic reports, participate in discussions and make oral presentations in English on their major topics.
