On December 31st, ETNews published an article about Professor Yu Chang-jae and Professor Kim Jae-hoon’s research team and their research findings. The research team announced on December 30th that they had developed a raw polarized structure that can dramatically increase the light efficiency of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) by applying a new luminous material. Usually, to obtain circular polarized light, chiral agents or other additives that affect polarization must be included in the luminous layer. Chiral agents are substances that cause the liquid crystal molecules to twist and align.

The research team has been conducting research into how high levels of circularly polarized electroluminescence is produced when a twisted structure is implemented and chiral additives are added into luminous materials that do not have any chiral properties, but are aligned and have elastic characteristics like liquid crystals. However, this time, the team came up with a method to create a twisted structure without the need for a chiral agent.

Professor Yu and Professor Kim’s research team stated, “We expect the results to not only be applied to display technology but also to light-source devices for bio-sensors.” The study was published in Light: Science & Applications, a leading scientific journal in the field of optical science, published by Nature Research.
