The number of people who have become naturalized as Korean citizens has surpassed 200,000 after 62 years since the establishment of the Korean government. The Ministry of Justice invited 15 newly naturalized citizens to government office buildings for a certificate of nationality conferment ceremony. Among them, professor Krisda Chaemsaithong(Department of English Language & Literature) from Thailand received attention by attending the ceremony as the 200,000th nationalized citizen of Korea. ▲ Professor Krisda Professor Krisda is affiliated with College of Humanities Department of English Language & Literature, and he settled in Korea 7 years ago after working as an English literature professor at the University of Houston in the U.S. Professor Krisda is renown as a worldwide expert in the field of court language, and went through a special promotion in the second half of the year in 2018 by being recognized for his contributions to the university. Professor Krisda shared his thoughts through Yonhap News by saying, “I really like the Korean people and the Korean culture after living in Korea.” He continued by saying, “Now that I have acquired citizenship by being recognized for my academic achievements, I will further contribute to Korea’s development through my studies and strive to cultivate young scholars.” Meanwhile, the initial nationalized person after the establishment of the Korean government was Son Il-seung with Taiwan nationality on February 8th of 1957, and since then, until the year 2000, naturalized persons were limited to 33 people annually. ▲ Professor Seon Yang-guk On October 31st, Hanyang University announced that professor Seon Yang-guk (professor in the Department of Energy Engineering) became a fellow of the Electrochemical Society. His research achievements in the field of the lithium-ion secondary cell and the next-generation secondary cell system were praised, contributing to his current status as a fellow. Seon was also named as '17 Scientists Who Could Receive the Nobel Prize' by the National Research Foundation. He has published 599 SCI-class dissertations and has 456 patents in and out of Korea. Furthermore, he is a senior editor of the 「ACS Energy Letters」 of the Chemical Society and was nominated as 'The Most Influential Top 1% Researcher in the World' in the fields of material science (2016-2018) and engineering (2016-2017). ▲Professor Han Myung-hoon Han Myung-hoon, a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery (Hanyang University Guri Hospital Neurosurgery) was awarded the ‘Den-Mei Brain Tumor Education Foundation’ award at the ‘2019 Asia Brain Tumor Society Symposium’ held in Taiwan on September 28th. The title of this presentation was ‘LGR5 and downstream intracellular signaling proteins which play critical roles in the cell proliferation of neuroblastoma, meningioma, and pituitary adenoma.’ The contents of the presentation included the discovery in the connection between Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) and human neuroblastoma, intracranial meningioma, and pituitary tumors. In regards to the new findings, Professor Han said, “The possibility that LGR5, which is a receptor protein related to stem cells, could have a connection with the production and proliferation of human neuroblastoma, intracranial meningioma, and pituitary tumors was confirmed. Professor Han graduated from Hanyang University College of Medicine and acquired a master’s degree and Ph.D. at the corresponding graduate school. ▲ Professor Han Tae-hee On August 14, Hanyang University announced that Han Tae-hee, a professor of Organic and Nano Engineering, was named the Emerging Investigator of 2019 by the Journal of Materials Chemistry A which is published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Journal of Materials Chemistry A selects highly promising researchers among the world's up-and-coming researchers who have earned a PhD within the past 10 years. Han was chosen for his research on graphene fiber and ion transport in a nanochannel. The key to the research conducted by Professor Han is to turn graphene into nanochannel fiber and convert the difference of salt concentration into electricity. Han added graphene quantum dots to the process of making graphene fibers to increase the surface charge density of the fibers. As a result, he found that this surface property plays a very important role in generating power. These fibers have a high transmission capacity of ions where they can generate more than twice as much power, compared to using a different level of salt concentration. Han said, “The fiber manufactured with the technology, elaborated on in the paper, can be used in the manufacture of fiber-type ion separation membranes due to its high ion transport capability. He also added, “It can provide a new direction for the study of molten salt development, a type of renewable energy.” The result of the study "Graphene Quantum Dots/Graphene Fiber Nanochannels for Osmotic Power Generation" was published online in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A on July 2, selected as a paper on the back cover. The team of Professor Jeong Je-chang of the Division of Electrical Engineering at Hanyang University achieved the highest-ranking performance at the NTIRE 2019 Academic Conference called the NTIRE 2019 Challenge on Real Image Denoising which was recently held in Long Beach, California, the U.S. The challenge was co-hosted by CVPR 2019, which is the world's foremost academic conference in the field of computer vision sponsored by Samsung Electronics, Amazon, Adobe, and NVDIA, and by NTIRE 2019, which is an academic comference on new technologies for the restoration of images and the enhancement of picture quality. The challenge was a competition that effectively removes the actual noise contained in natural images and restores the images. It was conducted on two tracks: noise removal of camera sensor output images and noise removal of standard color images. More than 200 researchers participated in each track and 15 teams, including South Korea, China, and the U.S., advanced to the final round. Jeong's team (researcher Park Beom-joon and Yoo Song-hyun) developed deep learning-based noise abatement technology and ranked second on each of the two tracks, earning the best overall score. "We want to contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the local image industry by developing core technologies by applying deep learning not only to image compression, but also to such areas as video restoration, image quality improvement and ultra-high resolution conversion," said Jeong. ▲ The winners of the 2nd Hanyang Innovation Award are taking a commemorative photo on June 11th in the Administration Building Hanyang University held the 2nd Innovation Awards at Seoul Campus, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of June 11th. In May, Hanyang University held a contest for Hanyang’s researchers to discover excellent pieces of technology and to commercialize it. Six out of 37 excellent products were awarded through the screening. Grand Prize was awarded to Professor Lim Tae-ho (Medicine), who developed Electronic Bio Deodorant Using Plasma Technology. The technology features mobile monitoring and control through microbial sterilization, removal of organic matter, and IoT linkage. Additionally, First Prize was given to Professor Oh Seong-Keun (Chemical Engineering) for developing a mask for blocking heavy metals with silica nanoparticles, and Cho Seong-ho (Electronic Engineering) for Contactless Bio-signal Measurement Technology. Also, Professor Lim Chang-hwan (Electrical and Biomedical Engineering), Kim Tae-won (Mechanical Engineering), and Lee Joo (Electrical and Biomedical Engineering) received Excellence Prizes for developing a brain-computer interface technology using AR, Hybrid Material Precision Styling Dressing, and the Slotless Motor, respectively. Meanwhile, Hanyang University will select additional technological products and participate in the Consumer Electronic Association (CES) held in Las Vegas in January 2020. ▲ Professor Kim Yoo-jeong Hanyang University Medical Center ophthalmology professor Kim Yoo-jeong was recently awarded the "Travel Grant" from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) that was held at the Vancouver Convention Center in Canada. Professor Kim Yoo-jeong presented on the topic of "Analysis of the MicroRNA levels in tears in Sjögren’s syndrome patients" and was recognized for primally analyzing MicroRNAs that show difference solely in manifestation. The Office of Academic Affairs selected nine top researchers from Hanyang University, Seoul Campus on January 21st. A luncheon was also held to commemorate the event. The top researchers were chosen based on which researchers had the most "highly cited papers,” placing them in the top 1 percent most cited in the past five years (2013-2017). The selection of top-level researchers was conducted this year to encourage outstanding professors in the field of research and to produce more highly influential researchers (HCRs) in the world by strengthening their research capabilities. Hanyang University selects approximately 10 top-level researchers each year and actively supports their research by supporting research personnel. ▲Hanyang University President Lee Young-moo (left) and Professor Kim Seon-jeong (right) On November 8, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) announced that each product developed by Hanyang University President Lee Young-moo and Professor Kim Seon-jeong (Department of Electrical Biomedical Engineering) has been selected as the winner of the '2019 CES Innovation Award.' The CES Innovation Award is given to innovative products by comprehensively evaluating design, technology, and consumer values in more than 30 fields such as home appliances. Hanyang University has won two innovation awards at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and the ceremony will be held in Las Vegas in early January of 2019. In addition, these products will be on display during the 2019 CES. According to CES, President Lee Young-moo's award-winning work is a compact and mobile Oxygen Nitrogen Generator (named O2N2). It injects concentrated Nitrogen into storage containers such as wine, vegetables, etc., to maintain the taste and quality for much longer periods of time. It can also be used for people who need an oxygen supply or for those in need of concentrated oxygen after exercising. This product also allows the user to control the amount of oxygen and nitrogen concentration through the use of mobile IoT technology. Professor Kim Seon-jeong's award-winning work is the Self-powered Emergency Signal Device. The device is designed to produce electricity from sea waves without batteries by utilizing a GPS signal transmission and LED light emission to facilitate rescue operations in marine emergency situations. This device was developed by Professor Kim and its primary uses in the future include military, aviation, and space industries as a technology that can supplement or replace battery dependent technologies. Meanwhile, Professor Lee Young-moo, who is famous for being a 'Researching President,' has published a thesis on the separation membranes in Science in the world's top scientific journal. Professor Kim Seon-jeong has also published a thesis on the subject of 'Room to produce electricity itself' in Science. Both professors have used their own research to develop innovative products that were not in existence before. An official at Hanyang University has stated, "We have achieved a remarkable feat by receiving the two innovation awards at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and we will continue education and research that will empower society through practical academics that our university pursues."
