Professor Park Ju-hyeon from the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering was chosen as the recipient of the ‘2020 TMS EPD (Extraction & Processing Division) Science Award’ from the American TMS (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society).
The EPD Science Award is an honorary award, which is given for the best single paper issued in the last two years within the chemistry field, including JOM, an SCI journal that TMS issues, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A & B, Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy, and other proceedings.
The awarded paper is titled “Effect of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) on Dephosphorization of Molten Steel by Electric Arc Furnace Slag (Heo Jeong-ho, Park Ju-hyeon),” which was issued in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B in December 2018. Additionally, Heo Jeong-ho, Ph. D., now working at LS-Nikko Copper inc, was the first author of the paper while he was studying for his doctorate degree. In the paper, the authors observed slag generation when putting direct-reduced iron to reduce the carbon dioxide emission of steel production, and they thermodynamically defined the causes of the impurity element (P) steel cleanness reduction. This research was part of a research project of national “Alternative Steel Based Steel Producing Process Carbon Dioxide Emission Reduction Technology Development (Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy).” This event is meaningful since he was the first person in 47 years to receive the award as a Korea-based institute researcher.
The awarding ceremony for the 2020 TMD EPD Science Award will be held at the 149th TMS Seminar in San Diego on February 25th, 2020.
Professor Park Ju-hyeon also received the ASM-TMS Marcus Grossman Young Author Award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society America in 2014, the ISIJ Sawamura Award from the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan in 2017, the New Academic Award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society Korea in 2012, and the New Academic Award for the Best Faculty (International Paper) of the ERICA Academic Award in 2018 and 2019.
