[HOT Issue]Shinhan Card Face Pay Commercialized at Hanyang University for the First Time in Korea

(Contributed by: Shinhan Card) On the 9th, Shinhan Card announced the commercialization of Shinhan Face Pay, which is Korea's first facial recognition payment system. The service has been established for the first time in Hanyang University Seoul Campus. Face Pay is a system that can be used after registering the card and facial information at the bank, and paying only with your face shown at the Face Pay established stores. Because it recognizes even the detailed curves of the face using the scanning method using the far-infrared radiation, there is no need to worry about misrecognition of similar faces such as the use of photos and such. Exact recognition of faces is also possible even when an individual is wearing glasses or hats because it analyzes each characteristic of the face using a 3D camera and far-infrared radiation scanning. Moreover, it also requires to input one's PIN to prevent any chance of expropriation. (Contributed by: Shinhan Card) Face Pay registration can be done at the Shinhan Bank Hanyang University branch and Hanyang Women's University branch's bank counter. It only involves a few simple steps, with a Shinhan Card and and an identification card. Using this system, everyone can make payments with just their faces with no need for cards, after a one-time registration. Shinhan Card established the system within 16 locations around the campus, including school cafeterias and CU convenience stores. The cafeterias at Hanyang Plaza, the College of Human Ecology, the Advanced Materials & Chemical Engineering Building, and the 1st and 2nd dormitories have the system installed, not to mention the CU convenience stores inside the campus. Payment is done with facial recognition and entering the PIN. Additionally, Shinhan Card is holding an event for Hanyang University students. A Minions character diary will be given to the first 1,000 students who register for Face Pay, and for those who make a purchase of more than 3,000 won using the system will be rewarded with 3,000 won cashback. Payments exceeding 3,000 won even after the first payment will be rewarded with 500 won cashback up to 20 times. The benefit will be applied all together at the end of 2020 June. Authorities of Shinhan Card mentioned that "Shinhan Face Pay is the start of a change in the payment environment, where your face becomes your wallet," and added that "while this is the time where social distancing is emphasized, we hope that Hanyang University students will use Face Pay often."

[HOT Issue][COVID-19] ‘Love in Deed and Truth’ into Practice Through Voluntary Fundraising

(source: Everytime) On March 1st, a post was uploaded on an anonymous university community app, also known as ‘Everytime’ with the title: ‘We are collecting donations from Hanyang University students for COVID-19 aid.’ This post was written by a student named Cho Sung-jae, who decided to raise funds to help those who are in need to fight the COVID-19 virus by emulating Hanyang University’s Motto, ‘Love in Deed and Truth.’ The organizers behind this fundraiser are students Cho Sung-jae (Department of Policy, Class of ’19), Kim Do-young (Department of Policy, Class of ’16), Shin Hyo-jung (Department of Policy, Class of ’17), and Park Eun-bin (Department of Policy ’19). The first round of fundraisers was supposed to be held from March 1st to March 8th, with the goal to raise two million won. However, due to the students’ keen interests and active donations, they were able to reach its goal of raising two million won after just two hours of uploading the post. A vote on how the donations would be done and to where the donations would be given were done through KakaoTalk’s Open Chatroom system, and the two million won that was collected was donated to the ‘Community Chest of Korea, Daegu Branch’ under the name ‘The Students of Hanyang University.’ (source: Everytime) For the second round of donations, the organizers expected to raise around eight million won by the 8th, but just like the first round of donations, around 10-million won was successfully raised in just a day of uploading the post about the second round of donations. By March 2nd, 8 P.M., a total of 1,0841,583 won was raised with 566 students who participated in the fundraiser. Because the donations are continuously being raised in a faster manner than anticipated, there isn’t a specific amount of money that has been set as the target goal for the third round of fundraisers, but the organizers plan to donate everything that has been given by the 9th. All fundraisers are given under the name, ‘The Students of Hanyang University’ and all matters concerning donations, such as where the donations would be given away, are done after careful negotiations through a KakaoTalk Open Chatroom where everyone is identified according to their real names. Students can send their donation money to this bank account: 3333-15-2756575, KakaoBank (Cho Sung-jae). Bank statements and a list of depositors can be checked on the Everytime app. Global News Team

[HOT Issue]Professor Kang Bo-seung Prevented an Emergency Room Infection of the Novel Coronavirus

Professor Kang Bo-seung from the Department of Emergency Medicine demonstrated excellent judgment by stopping the infection of the novel coronavirus within the emergency room. Patient 17, upon recently returning back to Korea from Singapore, checked into Hanyang University Guri Hospital after showing symptoms of fever on the 26th of last month. At the time, the screening clinic in front of the hospital sent the patient to the emergency room. As long as patients have not visited China, they were not considered as possible patients of the new coronavirus. Professor Kang, in charge of grouping the patients in front of the emergency room, suspected that patient 17 had the new coronavirus, calling the 1339 Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Call Center. However, the answer from the center was that because Singapore was not considered a danger area, the patient was not qualified to be examined for the new coronavirus. Despite that fact, Professor Kang did not stop questioning the patient and conducted a second examination interview, learning that patient 17 had made close contact with some people from China during the conference in Singapore. Professor Kang mentioned at an interview with Yonhapnews that, "I was aware of the fact that many citizens of Wuhan had already moved to Shanghai," also adding that "I began to suspect that the patient had the new coronavirus infection after hearing that he met many Chinese that came from Shanghai." In the end, Professor Kang relocated patient 17 to a negative pressure room, instead of the emergency room. On that day, patient 17 left the hospital and the negative pressure room because the individual had not come from the danger area. Afterward, patient 17 was informed that there was another patient with a definite diagnosis among the Singapore conference, had visited the screening clinic on the 4th, and was confirmed to have the disease on the 5th. It was a dangerous circumstance that could have resulted in the spread of disease if patient 17 were hospitalized in the emergency room. During the MERS incident of 2015, there was in fact a case where a super spreader infected 81 people within the emergency room, leading to the closing of Samsung Medical Center from June 14 to July 20, 2015. Because of this reason, health authorities have stipulated, with a doctor's supporting opinion, that it is possible to suspect patients of having the new coronavirus. Moreover, as patients from third countries continue to appear, they have also specified that people can be examined when they have related symptoms after 14 days of coming back from countries that are under the influence of this epidemic, under the discretion of a doctor. [HOT Issue]Clarivate Analytics Announces the Integration of SCI and SCIE to SCIE from 2020

When evaluating the research abilities of universities and researchers around the world, indicators such as 'the number of SCI-level papers' are commonly used. SCI stands for Science and Technology Citation Index, or 'a quotation index for science and technology papers.' In addition to this Science Citation Index (SCI), it includes SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded), SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index), A&HCI (Arts and Humanities Citation Index), and a databased called SCOPUS, provided by a publishing company Elsevier. Four of them, except SCOPUS, were built by the U.S-based Clarivate Analytics and are serviced through the Web of Science Core Collection. However, until now, the master journalist provided on the Clarebate Analytics website has provided a menu to identify SCI and SCIE, but there has been confusion due to SCI and SCIE's classification, as SCI was included in SCIE and provided within the Web of Science Core Collection. Indeed, SCI and SCIE do not differ in the quality of the paper, but only in the difference that SCI is data provided on CD/DVD and SCIE is data provided online. To solve this problem, Clarebate Analytics said it has been working to set internal policies and add information and URLs for each journal since October 2019, and that it will provide SCI by integrating SCI into SCIE without officially using SCI classification as of January 3, 2020. In other words, all science and technology journals in the Web of Science Core Collection are classified as SCIE. Global News Team

[HOT Issue]Seoul Campus Will Not Host the 2019 Spring Festival "Rachios"

While the Hanyang University (Seoul) Student Union is currently vacant, the 47th Emergency Committee of the Student Union officially announced on May 3rd that it will not hold the spring festival "Rachios." The committee said that it tried to recruit executive members, but that they found it difficult to proceed with the plan due to the low number of applicants even with two recruitment sessions. The following is the full statement: The full statement of the Emergency Committee of the Student Union about the spring festival "Rachios." Hello, this is the Emergency Committee of the 47th Student Union for 2019. First of all, we are sorry to inform you that the 2019 Spring Festival "Rachios" will not be held, and we ask for your generous understanding. Our central administration department tried to hold the festival to meet the students' great interest and love for the event. However, it was not easy to break down the walls of reality. The current chairman of the committee and the central executive chairman have argued the necessity and justification of holding the event since the beginning of the school year. As a result, the Special Committee for the Preparation of the Festival was launched inside the Central Operating Committee; we were eager to successfully hold the festival at all costs. As a person who experienced the festival last year, I know how much it means to the students of Hanyang University. Since the beginning of this year, we have been busy preparing for the festival and have conducted two public recruitment sessions to fulfill our plan. Unfortunately, the number of applicants was absolutely insufficient. Currently, the executive department itself has not sufficiently allocated a director or head deputy position, nor do we have enough supporting members. Even the director and deputy were narrowly recruited from two public recruitment sessions. Moreover, I regret to tell you that we are also facing an immediate lack of executive leadership compared to last year. In our current situation, we have concluded that we cannot proceed with the festival despite our passion and desire, because we do not have the ability to take responsibility for the safety of the students in case of any accidents. Even though the festival planning association has been recruited, we are concerned about the these issues. We cannot ask the association to take responsiblity for festival-related work; nor does the size of the association guarantee the lucrative fulfillment of the task. Therefore, we decided to call off the festival due to the lack of manpower. The festival would be virtually impossible to proceed with in the absence of the executive branch, as well as the production of content, discussions with management agencies, financial sponsorship, and other school departments. I would like to officially inform you that there will be no spring festival "Rachios" organized by the 47th Emergency Committee of the Students Union. Our committee is deeply sorry for not being able to proceed with the festival that has been loved and anticipated by the students. We are deeply sorry for letting you down. Sincerely, The Emergency Committee of the 47th Student Union Forwarding: Student Union Facebook Page Translated by Hyejeong Park
