[Policy]COVID-19 Special Scholarship...All Students Will Receive 150,000 Won

In order to relieve the economic pressures of students and parents and to provide a stable education during the COVID-19 crisis, each student will be given a special scholarship of 150,000 won. Hanyang University established a Communication Committee that pays attention to the voices of students regarding online classes and has a student representatives and head of the central department as members. During the meeting, the student representativse explained in detail the inconveniences and requirements of students, and the school headquarters tried to come up with a realistic support method by explaining the decreased earnings and changes in expenditures. As a result, they decided to provide the COVID-19 Special Scholarship." The head of the central department in Hanyang university decided to maintain the fall semester grade scholarships and household difficulty funds as planned and prepared an additional 3 billion won through business restructuring, cutting operating costs, and donations from faculty and alumni. The subjects of the payments are 11,980 students who did not receive a 100% support scholarship during the 2020 spring semester. Students who received a full-tuition scholarship from the school or an outside source, are on a leave of absence, have been expelled, or are delaying their degree cannot receive the scholarship. Students can check whether they are eligible for payment through Hanyang Portal – MY Home – Registration/Scholarship – Scholarship details. Unlike other scholarships, the COVID-19 special scholarship does not require any additional registration. It will be sent to the personal accounts of students eligible for payment in August. However, deposits may not be possible if personal accounts are not registered in the Hanyang Portal or if account numbers are wrong or contain errors. Thus it is necessary to check if the account number is properly entered before August 21. Hanyang University Communication Committee Chairman Professor Lee Sang-min said in his email to students to “please understand if there are inconveniences, although this is a support policy that considers the school’s current account situation,” and that “we will constantly listen to the many student voices through the Communication Committee in the future.” Detailed information can be checked through the Student Union homepage and the COVID-19 special scholarship announcement. ▲ Email sent to students, translation below Good evening. This is the chairman of the Communication Committee, Professor Lee Sang-min of the Division of Business Administration. I would first like to send words of comfort during the difficulties you are facing due to COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic. Our campus was not exempt from the impact, so we have been dealing with the crisis through establishing our own Infectious Disease Control Committee and Good Class TFT/Hope Class TFT. We have been trying our best for students’ safety assurance and education quality maintenance by running face-to-face classes while following the quarantine guidelines for experimental classes and several theoretical classes. However, we have heard the voices of those asking for tuition refunds due to student inconveniences regarding online classes and not being able to spend time on campus. So, we established the Communication Committee that has a student representative and Headquarters faculty as members, as the students have required. The student representatives explained in detail the discomforts students are facing, and the school headquarters explained the unexpected decrease in income and changes in expenditures by providing clear data. There were differences in opinion, but we tried to come up with a realistic solution amidst the crisis that nobody welcomed. As a result, we decided to provide the COVID-19 Support Scholarship as detailed below. 1) Recipients of payment_ Students (including international students) who did not receive 100% full-tuition scholarships (including national, school-based, and non-school-based) for the spring semester of 2020. * Non-registered returning students and students who have exceeded semesters are included in the scholarship support if they did not receive a 100% scholarship, but students on a leave of absence after paying for the tuition and those who have been expelled/dropped out are not included. 2) Amount of payment_ 150,000 won to each student 3) Sources of financing_ While maintaining the fall semester grade scholarships and household difficulty scholarships, 3 billion won from business restructuring, decreases in expenditures, and donations from faculty and alumni has been gathered 4) Method of payment_ Deposits to personal accounts * Registration of personal accounts in the Hanyang Portal system by August 21 is required Method of registration: Portal log in – Application – Registration/Scholarship – Personal Account Management (For long-term non-used accounts, deposits may not be possible and availability checks are required) 5) Details can be obtained through the Portal announcement after 2020. 8. 19. This support may not satisfy your expectations. However, we hope to be of at least a little help to you, so please understand if there are insufficiencies by considering the current school economic situation. We will continue to listen to the voices of students through the Communication Committee. Furthermore, we will ensure safety in administering the fall semester and try our best to provide the best education to help students continue to grow. Thank you. [General]Allowing Sit-In Lectures During the First Week of the 2020 Fall Semester

The Hanyang University Seoul Campus Academic Service Team announced on August 18th that sit-in lectures for the first week of the semester will be available for students who are preparing to make course registration corrections. Students that were unable to register for certain courses before the beginning of the semester are also eligible to participate in sit-in lectures. However, although the sit-in lectures have been allowed by the lecturers of some courses, this does not mean that students will not have to register for the courses. Courses eligible for sit-in lectures will be open starting from August 24th, as registration starts on the same day. Students wanting to sit-in on lectures will need to register with the lecturer of the course by sending an e-mail with a pre-designed form. If the lecturer allows the student to sit-in, they can join the lecture for one week, starting from September 1st. Staff from the Academic Service Team mentioned that "being allowed to sit-in for the first week of lectures does not mean the student can take the course for the whole semester," also adding that "registering for a sit-in is irrelevant to actual course registration, which means that students wishing to take the course for the semester must register again." A detailed announcement can be checked in the Announcement section of the Hanyang University website. ▶ Check the announcement at <2020-Fall Semester Sit-In Lectures Registration> Global News Team global@hanyang.ac.kr Translation by: Lee Won-young

[Alumni][Attention! Hanyangians] Alumnus Kim Tae-soo Creates an AI Voice with Emotion with the AI Voice Service "Typecast"

What would you say if you could meet your family in heaven? The reproduction of a dead daughter’s voice in the "Special VR Human Documentary" broadcasted by MBC last February has sparked a very big issue. It wasn’t the real daughter talking but instead, a voice made by the voice AI startup Neosapience. ▲ Alumnus Kim Tae-soo (Photo by ZDNet Korea) Alumnus Kim Tae-soo graduated from Hanyang University's Department of Electronic Engineering, received a doctorate at KAIST majoring in voice recognition, worked at LG Electronics and QUALCOMM Korea, and established Neosapiens in November of 2017. Their main product is Typecast, which is a voice service created by AI. Typecast is adapted with a deep-learning technology that Neosapiens developed and is now an AI voice actor service that provides 60 different voices. In particular, Neosapiens has put human emotions into the voices, and these characters are called voice actors. They have been showing rapid growth since February of 2019 when the Beta Service was launched, and they reached 50,000 members this July. Mr. Kim said that “there were voice compositing technologies before, but controlling diverse vocalizations was difficult,” and that “we’ve created a technology that can recognize the surrounding situation and conversation content, and control emotions, which are applied to Typecast to control the timing of reading, pauses, and even rhythms.” They’ve also developed a technology that can synthesize many languages in the same voice. For instance, it is possible to create a video of President Donald Trump speaking in Korean. Actually, the Neosapiens gained popularity by copying the voices of the United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the historic first United States - North Korea summit in June 2018 with an AI voice actor. The voice actors' voices are mostly from professional voice actors. Each character not only provides voices but also acts with emotions. For example, it is helpful for reading books or producing effective commercials. The Typecast service has a monthly subscription fee. The fees are different according to the places used and the users. There are 4 types of imposed fees, including a free service. The free service usage limits the word count to under 3,000, and the three paid programs involve basic (15,000), pro (45,000), and pro-plus (99,000) packages. Neosapiens received an accumulated investment of 6.2 billion won early this year by a series A investment from Company K Partners and Woori Capital. They gained attention by introducing a voice actor service that applies an AI voice composition technology at the last CES 2020 and were even selected as the IT·Untact field innovation company at the Seoul CAC Global Summit 2020 in June. Mr. Kim said in an interview with ZDNet Korea on August 19 that “we will introduce an AI voice that will surprise you all,” and that “We’ve surpassed last year’s sales in the first quarter of this year. Therefore, we are expecting a billion won in sales just through subscription alone this year”. Additionally, he shared his aspirations by saying, “The AI we created is a virtual actor. We cannot use the content if the acting is bad. That’s why it is an AI voice actor. It is a new kind of business change. There will appear global players in this field in the next 5 to 10 years.” Global News Team global@hanyang.ac.kr Translation by: Park Gyeong-min

Hanyang University's Department of Energy Engineering's Professor Chung Yun-suk’s research team and DGIST Professor Lee Yong-min's research team jointly succeeded in developing a high-reliability digital twin solid-state battery model. The Digital Twin is a technology that copies the exact same material in a virtual space. Through this technology, the research teams copied a sulfide system solid-state battery, which is difficult to deal with in a natural environment, in a virtual space. They have made possible copying a real battery in a virtual space to analyze physical phenomena that happen inside the battery and to predict changes in property according to diverse designs. Through this research outcome, the research teams provided a clue to advancing the commercialization of solid-state batteries and explained that they are expecting to spread as a platform for other electrodes and battery systems. This research was carried out with the support of the climate change response plan technology development business and the future materials discovery project promoted by the Ministry of Science & ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
