▲Professor Han Myung-hoon Han Myung-hoon, a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery (Hanyang University Guri Hospital Neurosurgery) was awarded the ‘Den-Mei Brain Tumor Education Foundation’ award at the ‘2019 Asia Brain Tumor Society Symposium’ held in Taiwan on September 28th. The title of this presentation was ‘LGR5 and downstream intracellular signaling proteins which play critical roles in the cell proliferation of neuroblastoma, meningioma, and pituitary adenoma.’ The contents of the presentation included the discovery in the connection between Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) and human neuroblastoma, intracranial meningioma, and pituitary tumors. In regards to the new findings, Professor Han said, “The possibility that LGR5, which is a receptor protein related to stem cells, could have a connection with the production and proliferation of human neuroblastoma, intracranial meningioma, and pituitary tumors was confirmed. Professor Han graduated from Hanyang University College of Medicine and acquired a master’s degree and Ph.D. at the corresponding graduate school. He is also actively engaged in societies, being a regular member of the Korean Society for Neurosurgery, a regular member of the Korean Brain Tumor Society, a regular member of the Korean Society for Neuro-Oncology, a regular member of the Korean society of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and a regular member of the Korean Society of Endoscopic Neurosurgery. The team of Professor Jeong Je-chang of the Division of Electrical Engineering at Hanyang University achieved the highest-ranking performance at the NTIRE 2019 Academic Conference called the NTIRE 2019 Challenge on Real Image Denoising which was recently held in Long Beach, California, the U.S. The challenge was co-hosted by CVPR 2019, which is the world's foremost academic conference in the field of computer vision sponsored by Samsung Electronics, Amazon, Adobe, and NVDIA, and by NTIRE 2019, which is an academic comference on new technologies for the restoration of images and the enhancement of picture quality. The challenge was a competition that effectively removes the actual noise contained in natural images and restores the images. It was conducted on two tracks: noise removal of camera sensor output images and noise removal of standard color images. More than 200 researchers participated in each track and 15 teams, including South Korea, China, and the U.S., advanced to the final round. Jeong's team (researcher Park Beom-joon and Yoo Song-hyun) developed deep learning-based noise abatement technology and ranked second on each of the two tracks, earning the best overall score. "We want to contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the local image industry by developing core technologies by applying deep learning not only to image compression, but also to such areas as video restoration, image quality improvement and ultra-high resolution conversion," said Jeong. ▲ The winners of the 2nd Hanyang Innovation Award are taking a commemorative photo on June 11th in the Administration Building Hanyang University held the 2nd Innovation Awards at Seoul Campus, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of June 11th. In May, Hanyang University held a contest for Hanyang’s researchers to discover excellent pieces of technology and to commercialize it. Six out of 37 excellent products were awarded through the screening. Grand Prize was awarded to Professor Lim Tae-ho (Medicine), who developed Electronic Bio Deodorant Using Plasma Technology. The technology features mobile monitoring and control through microbial sterilization, removal of organic matter, and IoT linkage. Additionally, First Prize was given to Professor Oh Seong-Keun (Chemical Engineering) for developing a mask for blocking heavy metals with silica nanoparticles, and Cho Seong-ho (Electronic Engineering) for Contactless Bio-signal Measurement Technology. Also, Professor Lim Chang-hwan (Electrical and Biomedical Engineering), Kim Tae-won (Mechanical Engineering), and Lee Joo (Electrical and Biomedical Engineering) received Excellence Prizes for developing a brain-computer interface technology using AR, Hybrid Material Precision Styling Dressing, and the Slotless Motor, respectively. Meanwhile, Hanyang University will select additional technological products and participate in the Consumer Electronic Association (CES) held in Las Vegas in January 2020. The 2018 Hanyang University ERICA Academic Award ceremony was held at 2 pm on June 5, 2019 at the PRIME Conference Hall on ERICA Campus. The award was established for researchers who have made outstanding academic achievements over the past year (March 1, 2017~December 31, 2017). The award ceremony categorized the prizes into the HYU Academic Prize (4 laureates), the Outstanding Faculty Prize (11 laureates), and the New Faculty Prize. The HYU Academic Prize (total score of 100) recipients were evaluated and selected by summing the total scores for faculty achievements (20), thesis achievements (30), and research funding procurement (50). Two of the top winners of the award were from Engineering; one was from the Natural Sciences (Pharmacy); and one was selected from the Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. The Outstanding Faculty Prize was awarded across four categories: Excellence in International Papers, Paper Citation Counts in International Papers (reflected performance for the last 5 years), Bibliographical Excellence, and Excellence in Industry-university Cooperation. Finally, the New Faculty Prize is for professors under the age of 45 with fewer than five years of employment at the university. Additionally, someone may only be selected once in their lifetime as a winner of the Excellence in International Papers Award. The ERICA Academic Award is designed to enhance research activities by showcasing and rewarding faculty who have achieved top research results. ERICA campus’s Industry-education Cooperation program recommends candidates to double or triple each year, and the final selection is made by ERICA’s Academic Research Committee. ▲ Professor Kim Yoo-jeong Hanyang University Medical Center ophthalmology professor Kim Yoo-jeong was recently awarded the "Travel Grant" from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) that was held at the Vancouver Convention Center in Canada. Professor Kim Yoo-jeong presented on the topic of "Analysis of the MicroRNA levels in tears in Sjögren’s syndrome patients" and was recognized for primally analyzing MicroRNAs that show difference solely in manifestation. According to the May 21st article from Health News, Professor Kim said, “MicroRNA manages the manifestation of genes that determine the formation of protein in cells, and it is actively being researched as a treatment for incurable diseases such as cancer, after the widespread recognition that it can effectively restrain target genes.” She went on to say, “I want to contribute to improving the symptoms of patients and the quality of life through deep research in discovering MicroRNA that can diagnose the unique Sjögren’s syndrome and target treatment.” Professor Kim Yoo-jeong graduated from Hanyang University College of Medicine and worked as a corneal disease clinic instructor at Seoul Nat’l Univ. ▲Paiknam Academic Information Center & Library received the first ever Korean library award at the 50th Korea Library Awards on February 22nd On February 22, the director of the Paiknam library Eom Ik-sang won the grand prize at the 50th Korea Library Awards. Hanyang was the sole recipient among the other universities. The Korean Library Awards is given by the Korean Library Association for selecting organizations and individuals who have contributed to the development of libraries nationwide. Paiknam library was recognized for its efforts on 'innovation' by remodeling libraries for user convenience and sharing their performances at seminars. ▲ Director Eom receiving the prize "I am very pleased to receive a meaningful prize in the year of the 70th anniversary of the opening of Hanyang University Library," said Professor Eom at the Department of Chinese Language & Literature. To foster future leaders of unfolding automobiles market and self-driving cars, Hanyang University (HYU) hosted its 15th Smart Model Car Competition at the Olympic Gymnasium on the 14th of July. Applause of encouragement and cheers were heard here and there with shout outs of supports being made each time a team took their turn to run their cars. Of the 20 teams that made it to the final, team Future Automotive Engineering (FAE) won the first place. All five members of the team are students of the Department of Automotive Engineering: Park Sung-woo (4th year), Shin Hyun-ki (4th year), Park Soo-hyun (4th year), Byun Hyo-seok (2nd year), and Byeon Moo-kyung (4th year). Participants were required to develop an embedded control system (a smart computer system enabling machines to operate on their own) and run their cars on the track, which was readily set in the Olympic Gymnasium, waiting for the entrants to come. Each team was to bring their cars to the start line and present its ability when called upon. The missions were as follows: cars must drive in the middle of the lane, must avoid obstacles, must speed down in the school zone and go back to the original speed after leaving the zone, should be able to go over the hill, and must make curves without departing the lane. Unforeseen and unforgettable “None of us expected to win the competition. Since all five of us has no experience of participating in a contest like this, we thought we would barely make it to the final,” began Byun. About 100 teams were present for the preliminary round, after which 20 teams were selected for the final. Much to their surprise, when team FAE passed the preliminary round ranking the 4th place, their goal changed to complete the track and make it to the finish line in the final. What was surprising was not only the fact that they have won the competition but also that they were the only team who made it to the finish line. “We were happy with the result, of course, but at the same time, we were quite shook from such unexpected outcome. We didn’t expect to be the only team to complete the track,” remarked Byun. The most essential requisite for the car was to keep itself in the middle of the lane, not crossing over to the other or departing it. When the car was free to drive, it had to maintain its speed and make curves as the track demanded. Then at some point, school zone was marked by thick, black lines in which the car had to slow down and avoid the obstacles. Marking the end of the school zone with another set of thick black lines, the car was to go back to its original speed and finish the track, passing a hill and stopping at the finish line without bumping into the blockage. FAE’s car has successfully fulfilled all these requirements and confidently marched to the end. Sung-woo, who was the team leader, was looking for fellow students who would join his team. The members came together as one team through acquaintance, since they took the same course. The team first gathered around April, in the middle of the semester, and met up from time to time to work on their automobile. It was after the semester was over that they deeply got down to their business and invested more time on constructing the car. They even got access to the 3D printer thanks to professor Yoon Soo-kyung and tested their designs, by mapping out where each part should lie. Nonetheless, they received no particular help from any of their professors to be fair. “This course named 'Microprocessor' we took was quite helpful in a way that it taught us about the parts we used for this competition.” Byeon Moo-kyung (left), Byeon Hyo-seok (middle), Park Soo-hyun (right) Fix it till you make it “Finding the right angle of the camera, which will be the eye of the car, was one of the most difficult tasks,” recalled Park. It was crucial to adjust the camera at the perfect angle because the car has to sense and move according to what it observes. If it is too short-sighted, the car will fail to perceive the other lane and if it is too far-sighted, the car will easily depart the lane. “We had to remove and adjust the camera countless times to find the perfect spot. Everything will go into nothing if the camera fails to observe the area correctly in the first place,” explained Byeon. In addition, more than ten parts had to be replaced because they were burned during the process. If one part goes wrong, the whole thing fails to function. Therefore, it was crucial that each part maintained its good condition. Overall, the process was not so smooth, as the members struggled to “Our team name was uninteresting, our car wasn’t that flashy, and we even had to fix it until the last minute. However, our car presented the best performance and eventually became the only car that finished the whole track. This was unexpected, but we’re very happy with how it all turned out,” said the members unanimously. "Small changes and corrections lead to a big difference!" Creative ideas can originate from literally everything, depending on the creator’s attitude. When making an advertisement, inspiration can come from other advertisements, one’s experience or thoughts, or other people. For Kim Dong-hoon (Department of Educational Technology, 4th year), the winner of New York Festivals 2017, however, it comes from his dissatisfaction about the society. New York Festivals is one of the most well-known international award competitions for the world’s best works. Winning two Third Prizes in the New York Festivals 2017, Kim has taken a step closer to his dream. Different perspective, different approach Kim’s works by the name of ‘Cover by Artist’ and ‘Missing Models’ each received a Third Prize in the competition. ‘Cover by Artist’ is an advertisement idea proposed to the most popular digital music service in the United States Spotify, which puts the stage performance video of an artist on the space on the screen where there originally lies the cover album of the music to further promote the artist’s work. “If you use a music streaming service, the cover album takes up most of the space of your screen. I personally enjoy listening to live concert music and I suddenly thought if I could turn the idle space into a room for performance videos, this could be a means of advertising while making the service more enjoyable.” Spotify - Cover By Artists from Donghoon Lee on Vimeo. His other work ‘Missing Models’ is an idea derived from the hopes of helping to find missing children. In a poster, there are hundreds of faces of missing children clustered together. That makes it hard for people to take a close look at each one, which got Kim thinking. Kim thought about instances where people take a close look at the figure and came up with home shopping. He applied the concept to WooCommerce, a customizable e-commerce platform for building online business and inserted the missing children’s face as the models’ face in the home shopping sites. Spotify, Woocommerce, missing children, and home shopping are all something that everyone is familiar with. Yet, no one has ever came up with these ideas so far. Kim’s way of thinking and approaching certain situations led him to devise such ideas. “I take a lot of notes in my daily life. It could be under any circumstances, really. Those little notes help me to create helpful ideas later on.” From problem to idea “When I look at advertisements, there are a lot of things that I don’t like about. In general, I see a lot of factors in this society that could be improved. What I do in that situation is that I take note of them and try to solve them in my own way, through making creative advertisements.” This is how his two award winning advertisement ideas came into being. Kim sees every problem as a potential idea for his work and use them as a source of ideas. “I don’t have a particular source of inspiration every time I make an advertisement. My daily life and every aspect of it could be my inspiration that gives me ideas.” Kim wants to make advertisements that could help solve social problems. Kim first got interested in making advertisements after watching one in one of his classes. “It was a chocolate advertisement and it was the first time in my life that I felt like I wanted chocolate just by watching an advertisement. I was amazed by how a short advertisement could convince people to change their minds.” As an Educational Technology major, Kim knows how to think from a learner’s perspective. This helped him to consider what the audience would want from an advertisement, enabling him to produce a more effective result. After making ads, being aware that random moments could inspire him, Kim became more attentive to little details of his life.
