On June 3, 2020, The Korea Herald released news that Korean tech firms were creating coalitions to reinforce artificial intelligence technologies with the government's initiative to make Korea an AI powerhouse. There will be two coalitions, one formed by KT, LG Electronics, and LG Uplus, and the other composed of SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and Kakao.
Hanyang University was invited by the coalition of KT, LG Electronics, and LG Uplus. Under the coalition, Hanyang University, along with other entities such as Korea Advanced Institute of Technology, Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of the ICT Ministry, plans to seek new business opportunities by exchanging AI technologies and compatible solutions.
By using each of the companies' strengths, the coalition will come up with new ways to apply KT's AI speaker GiGA Genie to LG's ThinQ smart home appliance lineup that is currently joined by foreign AI giants like Google and Amazon. The three companies, now forming one team under the name "AI One Team" also seeks to find an AI-powered solution that can reinforce the prediction of pandemics like COVID-19 through the use of KT's global pandemic prevention platform.
This coalition will be competing against the coalition formed by SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and Kakao, which aims for maximization of the involved companies' current capabilities pivoting on their voice-activated AI speakers.
