Hanyang University Department of Otolaryngology professor Song Chang-myeon has been awarded the 'Basic Medical Research Award.' The award was given on August 22nd at the Daegu Hotel Interburgo Exco Grand Ball Room in the Fall Conference of basic thyroidology held by the Korean Thyroid Association. The award was given to young researchers to support the research in basic thyroidology.
The title of the paper that Professor Song was awarded is 'Association of DNA Repair Gene Polymorphism and Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma.' The research aims to discover genes that cause thyroid cancer, especially focused on gene aberration of the genes that recover DNA after they have been damaged by radiation exposure and carcinogens.
Professor Song mentioned that "the research has been conducted for the basic studies on prevention and cause of thyroid cancer, the illness that is increasing to occur within the country these days," and added that "[he is] planning to continue the research on the various causes of thyroid cancer, to help the prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of the illness."
Professor Song graduated from the Medical School of Seoul National University, receiving a master's and doctor's degree from the same university. He started diagnosing at Hanyang University Hospital starting from 2012, with a focus on thyroid cancer, head and neck cancer, and voice disorders. Song is actively participating in the Korean Thyroid Association, The Korean Society for Head & Neck Oncology, Korean Society of Head and Neck Surgery, and Korean Society Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and have been awarded the best academic award from the Academy of Asia-Pacific Thyroidology in 2017.
