China scored the highest number of universities within the top 100 list with 24 universities holding their positions.
In Korea, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is the only university within the top 10 list, recording 9th place, which is a one step drop compared to last year’s 8th place. Seoul National University (11th), Korea University (12th), Sungkyunkwan University (16th), Yonsei University (21st), Hanyang University (24th) and POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) (26th) followed the list. Hanyang University was the only university that climbed up in rank, whereas, all but Korea University, which recorded the same rank as last year, dropped in their rankings.
Hanyang University recorded the highest rank since the announcements began in 2009. It switched positions with POSTECH as it rose from 7th to 6th place domestically. The ‘outbound exchange’ index received the highest score of 99.6, followed directly by the ‘inbound exchange’ which received 99.2, noting the active operation of exchange student programs in Hanyang University. ‘Graduates reputation’ (93.7) and the ‘Ratio of faculties possessing doctoral degrees’ (96.8) also received high scores.
The Chosun Ilbo reported that education environments such as the ‘number of students per faculty’ is falling over among local universities, and revealed that there are criticisms of universities filling the voids of retired faculties with adjunct or invited instructors, as the finance of universities face hardships.
