To Ardent You, made by students from the Department of Theater and Film, has been registered on the short film category of the '23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN)', which was held until August 7th. This film, presented as the first film of the 'Fantastic Short Film 7 Masterpieces' (a BIFAN rule that combines 5 short films and presents them within 90 minutes), came into the spotlight for having the youngest director as well as being an undergraduate student made film. It is rare to have undergraduates’ workshop films in a big scale film festival. Kim Ji-hong (a junior from the Department of Theater and Film), who took charge of the directing and scripting of To Ardent You, shared his story. ![]() To Ardent You is a short film, made as a sophomore workshop in the Department of Theater and Film during the second semester of 2018. The plot is based on an imagination that the main character is suffering from the other characters while making comics. The characters force the other character to choose further plots, and he falls into total confusion. Kim cheered himself while projecting burdensome feelings that he wants to make a good film after being discharged from military service. In order to make a film, a lot of people are necessary including actors, editors, a camera crew, lighting engineers, and directors. All of the staff and actors of To Ardent You are Hanyang undergraduates. This is a rare case even though it is an undergraduate workshop film. Kim asked all of them to join. ![]() (Photo courtesy of Kim) Films made for workshops infrequently make a contract with distribution agencies since they have a rare chance for screening. To enlist the film without distributors, complex sequences are to be solved. Kim said, "I might as well wanted to register this here and there." He also continued, "People around me suggested I register for BIFAN since the style of the film goes well with that of BIFAN's. Not only was the atmosphere of the filming site good, but I also thought that keeping the file stuck in my hard drive and not being shown is not a manner for staff and actors, who devoted themselves to this project." ![]() About the film festival, he said: "I felt sorry that we found some fibrillation that we could not see at screens while monitoring." For now, To Ardent You will not be shown furthermore. Kim is thinking of registering Maggots, Scatter in the '24th Busan International Film Festival (Short Film)' in October and in the '2019 Seoul Independent Film Festival' in November. "The story is based on a gloomy atmosphere, unlike other films I've made," added Kim, "My goal is to keep trying new things while filming." |
