Hanyang University Hospital division of infectious diseases Professor Kim Bong-young was recently selected for the 2020 International Ambassador Program of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America. He was recognized for his expertise and research regarding management activities of antibiotic usage inside hospitals (antibiotics stewardship program) and is the third national division of infectious diseases doctor to be selected.
The Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America is an academy with the highest authority worldwide in the medical infection-related field, which has selected about 10 medical related infection experts as international goodwill ambassadors every year starting in 2009. The international goodwill ambassador is a title given to a nation’s representative infection management expert by a comprehensive evaluation including research paper records, research achievements, and future activity plans. It is a program that forms a worldwide researcher network and supports mutual exchange.
This award ceremony was planned to be held from May 26 to 30 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA at Decennial 2020, but it was canceled due to the impact of COVID-19.
Professor Kim said that “although the national interest in antibiotic stewardship program is increasing due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the legislative support of local society and the government in dealing with the problem is only minimal compared to that of other developed countries.” He also revealed his strong ambition that “through this opportunity, I will cooperate with world-class experts and bring up the level of antibiotics stewardship programs inside hospitals at national medical institutions and the establishment of infection response related systems to a world-level.”
After graduating from Hanyang University College of Medicine and receiving a doctoral degree in the Graduate School of Medicine, Professor Kim has actively been making good results in his academic field such as winning the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases Academic Research Fund Award, the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases·Journal of the Korean Society for Antibacterial Medicine 『Infection & Chemotherapy』 excellent reviewer award, 2019 Korean Society for Antibacterial Medicine· Korean Society of Infectious Diseases excellent lecture award.
