Hanyang University’s Seoul Campus was ranked 3rd while ERICA Campus was ranked 10th in JoongAng Ilbo’s comprehensive university rankings for 2019.  Hanyang University reaffirmed its position as one of the most prestigious universities in Korea, with both campuses placing in the top 10 for five consecutive years.
On the 16th, the Joongang Ilbo, which has been evaluating the overall competitiveness of 4-year universities for the past 26 years, released the results of their university rankings for 2019. The evaluation was conducted for 56 major 4-year universities, and was divided into two types of evaluations: Comprehensive Evaluation and Department Evaluation. The Comprehensive Evaluation was conducted for 50 4-year comprehensive universities each with four or more departments, including the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and Arts & Physical Education. Universities specializing in science and engineering, such as KAIST and POSTEC, were excluded from this comprehensive evaluation. The department evaluations were conducted across four categories: the Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science, and Engineering. Four evaluation criteria (professors’ research, educational environment, student performance, and reputation) and 33 detailed indicators were used to assign a total of up to 300 points.  (**Refer to the distribution of marks in the index below.)

Hanyang University Seoul Campus keeps 3rd place for 3 consecutive years… ERICA campus secures TOP 10 status

In this comprehensive evaluation, Seoul National University has ranked 1st place for 5 consecutive years. This shows that there were no fluctuations in the rankings after the evaluations were divided into ‘Comprehensive Evaluation’ and ‘Department Evaluation’ in 2015.  There have been no actual changes in rank for the top 5 universities for the last 5 years. Seoul National University ranked first, followed by Sungkyunkwan University in 2nd place, Hanyang University Seoul Campus in 3rd place, Yonsei University Seoul Campus in 4th place, and Korea University in 5th place. The changes during the last 5 years have mainly been between the rankings of 2nd and 3rd place between Hanyang University and Sungkyunkwan University, and between 4th and 5th place with Yonsei University and Korea University switching places. Chung-Ang University climbed to 7th place from 10th last year, which pushed the other universities down to 8~10th place. According to the JoongAng Ilbo, universities that ranked 11th-20th place showed fierce competition with only a 1 or 2 point score difference between each other.
Looking back at the ranking history of Hanyang University Seoul campus, it started at 8th place in 1995, dropped down to its lowest at 9th place in 2003, 2010, 2012, but claimed its position in 2nd place in 2016 and has continued to maintain 3rd place for 3 consecutive years. ERICA campus made its grand entrance in 12th place in 2013 when the first separated evaluations began. Although it made a backward step to 17th place in 2014, ERICA campus managed to regain its position to 8th and 9th place after 2015. Although ERICA campus placed 10th this year, it has ranked firmly within the top 10 over the past 5 years. As a result, Hanyang University is the only university that has both its main and branch campuses in the top 10 and is applauded for maintaining its unwavering position.

Hanyang University Excels in the ‘Student Education and Achievements’ Sector … Took 1st and 3rd Place

Taking a look at the rankings in each sector, Hanyang University received especially high scores in the ‘student education and achievements’ category. Seoul Campus took 1st place and ERICA campus took 3rd place. JoongAng Ilbo reported that “Hanyang University (Seoul), which ranked in 3rd place, took 1st place in the Student Education and Achievements category. This shows that the university embodies its own unique features regarding real education such as student start-up support, start-up education, and field practice, compared to other leading universities.”
In addition, in ‘Professors’ Research’ (100 points), ERICA Campus ranked 10th and Seoul Campus ranked 4th, behind Seoul National University, Korea University, and Sungkyunkwan University. In ‘educational environment’ (100 points), Hanyang ranked 4th, following Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Yonsei University, and 5th place in ‘Reputation,’ after Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, and Sungkyunkwan University.
The ‘Reputation’ category was evaluated by collecting survey data of approximately 1,800 people, including high school teachers that advise students about university matters, human resource managers that hire university graduate students, and parents of middle and high school students. The total score of ‘Reputation’ was ranked as follows: Yonsei University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Hanyang University. The rankings for “the most desirable recruits’ was as follows: Yonsei University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Hanyang University.

“Hanyang University = The Best Start-Up University” Renowned … Outstanding Number of Startups
Hanyang University took 1st place in the ‘Student Startup Support and Achievement’ section which is part of the ‘Student Education and Achievements’ category. Once again, Hanyang University attracted the most attention and confirmed the position of ‘Startup = Hanyang University.’ This category was evaluated based on the amount of startup monetary support per student (3 points), the number of companies established per 10,000 students (3 points), total amount of revenue per company (2 points), and the number of employees per company (2 points). Hanyang University ranked on top with a score of 7.72 points (out of a total 10 points).
In detail, the monetary support of Hanyang University was 332,000 won, which is 17,000 won less than Dongguk University’s 349,000 won. However, the number of companies per 10,000 students (32.27) was higher than that of 2nd place Incheon University (27.35). ERICA Campus ranked in 8th place with 14.52 companies. ERICA Campus was ranked in 8th place for ‘total revenue per company’ with 23.15 million won. JoongAng Ilbo stated “#1 Ranked Hanyang University had a big budget for startup support and many student startup companies. In April 2018, they opened the ‘247 Startup Dorm’, an on-campus startup dormitory, which helped closely manage the qualitative growth of student startups. Students with a startup idea can receive advice and guidance from startup mentors for a year in the startup-exclusive dormitory and working place,” which helps explain the key to the university’s high performance. In addition, the number of startup companies and their total revenue estimation were based on current students and students who started and maintained their startups within a year after graduation.
