On June 19th, the U.K.'s world university evaluation agency QS announced their 2020 World University Rankings. Hanyang University rose one position up to 150th place from the previous year.
The top position has been held by MIT in the U.S. for eight consecutive years, followed by Standford University in second place and Harvard University in third. The U.S. has five school ranked in the top 10, Britain has four, and Switzerland has one, while Switzerland's ETH Zurich University took 6th place. In Asia, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore and the National University of Singapore tied for 11th place, being the highest ranking.
Among South Korean universities, Seoul National University ranked highest, despite its one notch drop down to 37th compared to the previous year. Following are KAIST (41), Korea University (83), POSTECH (87), Sungkyunkwan University (95), Yonsei University (104), Hanyang University (150), and KyungHee University (247), making it eight universities that entered the rank of 300. While the ranking of Korean universities is steadily rising, the top universities are facing stagnant times, falling one to four notches. In particular, 28 of the top 30 universities saw their rankings drop in terms of graduation reputation. Relatively, Asian countries such as Singapore, China, and Japan have been rising steadily.
Hanyang University ranks 150th in the world and 7th in Korea. Beginning to rise in 2011 after a slight fall in 2010, it rose one notch in 2019 from the previous year, maintaining a steady rise for nine consecutive years. It seems that the rise in Hanyang University's academic reputation had an impact on its overall ranking. According to the detailed evaluation index, the ranking of graduates was the highest among the indexes within 68.4 points, while that of fellow researchers rose to 46.8 points from 43.5 last year.
QS World University Rankings, being in its 16th year this year, surveyed 1,210 universities in 94 countries. It analyzed four areas, including research, education, graduates, and internatinalization, on six indicators, and 40 percent of them were conducted by a survey of 94,000 scholars around the world in academic evaluations. In addition, the overall score was also calculated based on the number of papers being quoted (20%) that indicates the influence of the research, student to teacher ratio (20%) that evaluates the condition of instruction, graduate reputation (10%) that is conducted through personnel managers from around the world, the ratio of foreign professors (5%), and the ratio of international students (5%).
